RE: RCGP’s bid to host WONCA World conference in 2022
Warmest greetings from the Royal College of General Practitioners! I hope this letter finds you well.
I write to you to let you know that the RCGP has submitted an application to host the WONCA World conference in 2022, and I would like to use this opportunity to give you more detail about our bid ahead of the next World Council meeting in Seoul in a couple of months’ time and also seek your views and advice on what we can do to make it a better event.
As you know, the RCGP has been a member of WONCA ever since this international organisation was established in 1972, and all these years we have been committed to working collaboratively with our colleagues and partners around the world to develop family medicine and to realise our joint vision that every patient should have access to a family doctor.
The year 2022 is particularly significant for us because we will be celebrating our 70th anniversary, and we could not think of a better way to mark the occasion than with our friends and colleagues in the WONCA family!
Themed “Innovating Family Medicine for a Sustainable Future”, the conference would run over four days on 14-18 September 2022 at London’s well-known international congress centre ExCeL with excellent transport links and a stone-throw away from London’s City Airport. We have partnered with the Czech-based professional conference organisers, GUARANT International, who have organised a number of WONCA events in various countries, and would draw on our experience of hosting our own National Primary Care conference in the UK, which we have been running since 2007. We have also been exploring a number of accommodation options London can offer and will be offering a range of affordable packages starting from USD 20 suitable for students, trainees and recently qualified doctors, as well as those coming from countries with lower GDP.
We have put more information on the conference website: www.woncaworld2022.org and invite you to visit it to learn more about our plans and vision.
We would like to organise an excellent and memorable event of an international calibre which would attract delegates from around the world, invite a number of renowned speakers and offer engaging workshops and thought-provoking presentations on clinical sustainability, improving quality of care, doctor-patient interaction and the impact of new digital and communication technologies and artificial intelligence to name a few.
To develop an intellectually stimulating programme, we have put together a Scientific Committee which includes experts from all WONCA regions. We are also committed to seeking contributions to the scientific programme from all WONCA networks and working parties and the young doctors’ movements.
We really want to hear from you what you would like to see at this conference.
If you feel you would like to talk to us – I would be more than happy to speak with you by Skype or telephone! Please let me know if you do, and one of my colleagues will be in touch to make arrangements and agree a mutually convenient date and time.
The RCGP would be enormously grateful for your support and your vote at the WONCA World Council meeting in Seoul! If a representative from your organisation is unable to attend and you will be voting by proxy – we hope you will instruct your nominee to give your vote to us!
I look forward to an opportunity to speak with you at your convenience.
With kind regards and best wishes from London,
Dr Valerie Vaughan-Dick BSc MSc CFPA PhD
Chief Operating Officer, Vice-Chair of the Bidding Committee
